Studio 54 Dj Robbie Leslie still loves performing today. He recently joined us at COCKtail playing a set at our Fire Island Tea Dance weekend. He was the last of 10 renowned disc jockeys performing at the marathon 40-hour closing party of New York's private club, The Saint, in 1988.
In 2005, he celebrated thirty years in the night club business, and continues to perform in clubs around the country and internationally. He produces a weekly show on Sirius/XM Studio 54 Radio, "Robbie Leslie Presents" where he shares his classic recordings, current international shows, and legendary DJ showcases.
Disco Diva and chart topper France Joli with a number of hit songs and a trajectory that has lasted her through four decades of performing, Joli is an icon in her own right. A natural performer since a young age, Joli was adamant about breaking into the music industry. She recorded her first album in 1978, and it was released in 1979, when Joli was 16.
After the release of her album, Joli was presented with an opportunity that would go on to effectively change the course of her career. Donna Summer — the disco legend and Joli’s personal hero — had suddenly canceled a performance at a beach concert in Fire Island. The promoters reached out to Joli to see if she could stand in for Summer. Joli agreed.
Now famously known as the “Beach ‘79” concert, Joli performed for a crowd of 5,000 cheering gay men. Her performance was so strong and so good, that her song “Come to Me” began to skyrocket. After this performance, Joli became an overnight sensation.
After 40 years in the music industry, Joli is still performing. She travels around the country performing at clubs, benefits and festivals, still singing her hit songs from the height of disco.
The Moon and Spoon was an iconic symbol of Studio 54, a legendary nightclub in 1970s Manhattan. An eight-foot-wide crescent moon sculpture was a part of the original club design. A coke spoon was added later as a tongue-in-cheek touch and a symbol of the debauchery that took place at the club. Several times a night at Studio 54, the moon and a spoon would fly in separately from the left and right wings and meet center stage. The spoon would then twinkle and a line of lights would zip up the moon's nose, referring to the use of cocaine.
